Goole Bicentenary
200 YEARS OF GOOLE
For Goole’s bicentenary, we transformed St John’s Parish Church into a spectacular canvas, taking audiences on an immersive journey through 200 years of the town’s history.
A six-minute audiovisual experience bringing together archive, illustration, animation, light and sound — from Goole’s origins to its future.
A port in green fields
A six-minute immersive projection mapping experience bringing 200 years of Goole’s history to life through archive, animation, light and sound.
Projected onto the façade of St John’s Parish Church, A Port In Green Fields transformed one of Goole’s most recognisable landmarks into a canvas for storytelling. The experience journeyed through the town’s origins, maritime and industrial heritage, and its continuing evolution, combining historical archive with original animation, illustration, music and projection.
The experience formed the centrepiece of Shine On Goole, a wider programme of light, sound, performance and installation across the town. Alongside the projection at St John’s Parish Church, Goole’s iconic ‘Salt & Pepper Pots’ were illuminated, with further performances and installations creating a town-wide celebration.
The result was an experience designed not simply to be watched, but to encourage audiences to explore, gather and experience Goole in a new light.

the brief
How do you tell 200 years of a town’s history in six minutes?
For Goole’s bicentenary, the challenge was to create a spectacular public experience that celebrated the town’s heritage while feeling contemporary, accessible and relevant to audiences today.
Our response was to make the architecture itself part of the story.
THE IDEA
St John’s Parish Church became more than a projection surface.
Through animation, archive imagery, illustration, light and music, the building was transformed into a vessel carrying audiences through Goole’s story.
From its origins in the surrounding marshland and the development of the Aire & Calder Navigation, through its maritime and industrial heritage, to the Goole of today and its future.
